Humalog is a medication utilized for managing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It reduces blood sugar through various mechanisms, such as assisting certain body tissues in storing glucose, inhibiting the liver's glucose production, blocking the breakdown of fats and proteins, and regulating the overall synthesis and degradation of sugar within the body.

You should not use Humalog if: you have an allergy to Humalog or any of its inactive components and/or if your blood sugar is currently very low. Additionally, sharing your insulin with someone else is not advisable.

Consult with your doctor regarding Humalog if you experience low blood sugar, have low potassium levels in your blood, suffer from kidney or liver issues, or have heart failure, especially if you are on thiazolidinediones (TZDs). While some insulin products can be mixed, Humalog is not one of them.

Do not mix Humalog with any other insulins, even if you are using a version of Humalog that comes pre-mixed.

If you encounter any of the following side effects that are severe or persistent, notify your doctor: infections of the nose or throat, increased susceptibility to flu-like symptoms, headaches, pain or irritation—particularly at the injection site, accumulation of fatty tissue at the injection site, itching, rashes, joint pain, weight gain, or swelling in the feet, ankles, and lower legs.

You should discontinue this medication and contact your doctor if you notice any serious side effects, including low blood sugar, low potassium levels in the blood, or severe and/or life-threatening allergic reactions.

Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, illegal, recreational, herbal, nutritional, or dietary supplements.

Humalog has interactions with numerous medications, such as: beta blockers; drugs containing liraglutide and repaglinide; estrogen-containing medications and hormone therapies; sulfonylureas and medications containing glipizide; other diabetes medications; and psychiatric drugs.

It is advisable to avoid or limit alcohol consumption while using Humalog.
